The story
Updated
There's a polar bear on Venezuela's national beer, and nobody there finds it strange: Polar Pilsen is served so cold the bear earns its place. This is the pale golden lager of Caracas street parties and beach coolers, usually in small bottles so the last sip is still icy.
Cervecería Polar began brewing it in Caracas in 1941 and grew into Empresas Polar, the food-and-drink group that also makes Harina P.A.N. — the precooked corn flour behind the arepa. One company supplies both the national dish and the national beer; few brands anywhere are woven that tightly into daily life.
Brewing at scale through Venezuela's long economic crisis is an achievement in itself, yet Polar produced 5.2 million hectoliters in 2025 — enough for a place among the world's forty biggest brewers — and the beer follows the diaspora wherever Venezuelans settle: spot the polar bear in a bodega fridge abroad and you've found a small, cold piece of Caracas.
What it tastes like
Pale gold with a thin white head and a light, fast-drinking body: soft grainy malt, a whisper of sweet corn, and just enough hop bite to keep it snappy. It's engineered to be drunk close to freezing — let it warm and it turns plain, so Venezuelans simply don't let it warm.
