Águila

Carnival in Barranquilla is one of the biggest street parties in the Americas, and Águila — "eagle" — is what it drinks: a light golden lager brewed in that same Caribbean port city since 1913, now one of Colombia's true national beers and the costeño coast's gift to the whole country.

Cervecería de Barranquilla first brewed it in 1913 as one of four house brands; by 1933 Águila had outsold its three siblings so thoroughly that the brewery dropped the others and kept only the eagle. Beer and hometown festival grew up together: Carnival's days of cumbia, costumes and coastal heat run on lager served as close to freezing as physics allows. Football sealed the national role — the yellow of the label and the yellow of Colombia's shirt have spent decades appearing in the same photographs.

A chain of mergers later folded the brand into Bavaria, Colombia's brewing giant and now part of AB InBev, the world's largest beer company at 484.19 million hectolitres in 2025. Yet Águila has never really left home: Colombia and its diaspora drink nearly all of it, fast and cold, in weather that gives them no choice at all.

A featherweight golden lager tuned for Caribbean heat: faint grain and sweet-corn flavours, minimal hop presence, high carbonation and a finish that vanishes in seconds. Served close to freezing — often in small pours refilled fast so it never warms — it works less like a sipping beer and more like air conditioning you can drink.
