Castle Lager

Wherever South Africans gather around a braai — the open-fire barbecue that anchors the country's social life — Castle Lager is usually within reach. It has been South Africa's definitional beer since 1895, and it spent decades as a sponsor of the national rugby and cricket sides.

It was born in gold-rush Johannesburg, a city that had been open veld barely a decade earlier, where brewer Charles Glass made his Castle beer for miners with new money and serious thirst. South African Breweries formed around that business in 1895, and Castle stayed its flagship as SAB grew into one of the biggest brewing companies on earth.

When AB InBev swallowed SABMiller in 2016 — one of the largest corporate takeovers ever completed — Castle came with it. Global ownership has not dented the identity: it is still brewed in South Africa, still the lager of the braai, and still poured from Johannesburg across the southern half of the continent.

Deep gold with a notably dry, almost mineral finish — Castle runs less sweet than most mainstream lagers, with a grainy, grassy middle and a firm bitter edge that suits smoke and charred meat. That dryness is the house signature: it ends clean and slightly stony, asking for the next sip.
