The story
Updated
On the steel tables of Thailand's open-air restaurants, the bottle with the leopard on it is usually the one sweating fastest: Leo, Boon Rawd Brewery's everyday lager, the affordable counterpart to its prestige sibling Singha and one of Southeast Asia's great workhorse beers.
Its 1998 birth date explains everything. The Asian financial crisis had just emptied Thai wallets, and Boon Rawd — brewer of Singha since the 1930s — needed a beer people could still buy by the crate. So Leo was pitched down-market on purpose, priced for hard times, and Thailand adopted it without a flicker of embarrassment.
Boon Rawd turned out 14.58 million hectolitres in 2025 — twenty-first among the world's brewers — and Leo is the volume end of that story. Drink it the local way: poured over ice, beside something ferociously spicy, in heat that makes the ice non-negotiable. Purists wince; Thailand, sensibly, has never asked their permission.
What it tastes like
Pale gold and light-bodied, with a mild grainy sweetness, faint floral hops and a fast, clean finish — softer and a touch sweeter than its sibling Singha. The carbonation is lively enough to survive the local habit of pouring it over ice, which rounds it out further. It exists to cool down spice, and it is very good at that.
