The story
Updated
The name is a Scandinavian toast; the beer is thoroughly Brazilian. Skol, a mainstream pale lager run by Ambev, sits at No. 9 on Kantar's 2026 world ranking — bigger than most of the European brands a drinker would guess first.
It began in 1964 as one of brewing's stranger experiments: an "international beer" designed by a consortium of brewers from several countries, meant to be sold identically everywhere under a name anyone could toast with. The world project mostly fizzled. Brazil, where Skol launched in 1967, is the exception that swallowed the rule — it grew into one of the country's dominant beers, the yellow can a fixture of beach summers and Carnival.
Today the brand belongs to Ambev, itself part of AB InBev, and its footprint follows Brazilian scale outward across Latin America and into parts of Africa. Brand Finance ranks it No. 18 among the world's most valuable beer brands.
What it tastes like
Pale straw, high fizz, featherweight body. Sweet grain up front, the gentlest bitterness after, and a finish that vanishes almost before you register it. Brazilians drink it estupidamente gelada — "stupidly cold" — which is the official-unofficial serving temperature, and out of a condensation-beaded yellow can in beach heat it does exactly its job.
