Radeberger

The pilsner Germans save for the good glassware comes from a small Saxon town outside Dresden. Radeberger is a snappy, pale-gold pils with a decisive bitter finish, sold in an embossed bottle that looks like it should hold something more expensive — Germany's idea of an everyday luxury.

The brewery opened in Radeberg in 1872, early in golden pilsner's conquest of the German-speaking world, and made the new style its whole identity: Radeberger has only ever billed itself as a pilsner house, a one-style bet it has never hedged in a century and a half.

Today it is the flagship of Radeberger Gruppe, Germany's largest brewing group — which belongs, improbably, to Dr. Oetker, the family firm the rest of the world knows for baking powder and frozen pizza. The group brewed just under ten million hectoliters in 2025, and the pils from the town that shares its name remains its calling card.

Brilliantly clear straw gold under a firm white head. Lean malt — water cracker rather than bread — then a decisive, herbal hop bitterness that dries the finish right out. It belongs to the stern northern school of German pils: cold, precise, a little formal, with a clean bitter snap that makes the next sip feel like the point.
