The story
Updated
Order 'ba ba ba' at a Ho Chi Minh City street table and you'll get 333, Vietnam's best-known beer export: a light pale lager stamped with three lucky threes.
The number is the story. The beer descends from Bière 33, a French-recipe lager of the colonial era named for its 33-centilitre bottle; American GIs drank '33' by the crate during the war years, and after reunification in 1975 the renamed Vietnamese brand gained a third digit. Locals will happily point out that the threes add up to nine — an auspicious number — which is the kind of upgrade a rebrand rarely achieves.
Today 333 is brewed by SABECO, the Saigon brewing giant, with Thailand's ThaiBev as controlling strategic investor — a thoroughly Southeast Asian ownership story for a French-born, Vietnamese-raised beer. SABECO turned out 13 million hectoliters in 2025, and 333 travels wherever Vietnamese kitchens do; the little can with three threes is a fixture of pho restaurants far beyond Vietnam.
What it tastes like
Straw-pale and lively, with a faint sweet-rice softness, a touch of grain, and barely-there bitterness — a beer built for food and heat. In Vietnam it often lands on the table with a glass of ice, which sounds like sacrilege and works like genius on a sweltering evening.
