Snow

The best-selling beer on Earth, by most counts, is one most drinkers outside China have never ordered. Snow — "snowflake" in Chinese — is routinely cited as the world's largest beer brand by volume, and it earns that title almost entirely inside a single country.

It began in 1993 as a local lager in Shenyang, an industrial city in China's frigid northeast, which explains the name. Scale came through consolidation: China Resources rolled up regional breweries across the country and put Snow on every one of their lines, for years in a joint venture with SABMiller. When AB InBev bought SABMiller in 2016, China Resources bought out the foreign stake and made the brand fully Chinese again.

The numbers stay hard to picture. Parent China Resources Beer brewed 110 million hectoliters in 2025 — third among all the world's brewers — and Brand Finance values Snow at $4.7 billion, sixth among beer brands anywhere. The current project is trading drinkers up, from the everyday green bottle toward fresher draft and premium lines.

Very pale straw color, light body, gentle carbonation. The flavor is soft and faintly sweet — steamed rice, a touch of grain, barely-there hops — engineered to sit alongside food rather than compete with it. Served ice-cold beside Dongbei barbecue or a bubbling hotpot, it disappears by the caseload, which is precisely the point.
