The story
Updated
Thirty-pack by thirty-pack, Natural Light — "Natty Light" to generations of American college students — became one of the country's biggest-selling beers without ever pretending to be fancy: a value-priced light lager from Anheuser-Busch that costs less than its stablemates and knows exactly who it's for.
It launched from St. Louis in 1977 as Anheuser-Busch's first light beer — the company's opening move in the light-beer wars, years before Bud Light existed. The pitch was radical only in its honesty: fewer calories, lower price, zero pretense. Half a century later the formula hasn't moved an inch.
Anheuser-Busch now sits inside AB InBev, the largest brewer on the planet at 484.19 million hectolitres in 2025, and Brand Finance ranks the Natural family the 42nd most valuable beer brand in the world — ahead of plenty of beers with better table manners. Tailgates, dorm fridges and beach coolers built that ranking one cold can at a time; loyalty like that is never an accident.
What it tastes like
About as light as beer gets while remaining beer: near-transparent pale straw, a fleeting white head, and a faint sweet-corn nose. The taste is a whisper of grain, a rush of carbonation, and a watery-clean finish with almost no bitterness at all. Serve it ice-cold from the can — warmth is its only real enemy.
