Carling Black Label

South Africans call it Zamalek, a nickname minted in 1993 when Kaizer Chiefs met Cairo's Zamalek in continental football: the Egyptian side wore the beer's red, black, and white — and, fans reckoned, hit just as hard. Carling Black Label is one of South Africa's biggest-selling beers, a full-strength pale lager drunk with devotion in township taverns from Johannesburg across Southern Africa.

The name traveled far to get there. Carling began in Canada and still lives a separate life in Britain, but South African Breweries launched its own Black Label in 1966 and made it thoroughly local — a stronger, working man's beer, sold for decades on the idea that hard graft deserves a proper reward.

SAB later folded into AB InBev, so Black Label now sits inside the world's largest brewing group, but its gravity is unchanged: Brand Finance ranks it among the fifty most valuable beer brands on earth, powered almost entirely by one country's loyalty — and one borrowed Egyptian name.

Clear amber-gold and stronger than it lets on at 5.5%: grainy sweet malt, a hint of syrupy corn, low bitterness, and a warming finish that justifies the reputation. The classic serve is a shared 750ml "quart," ice cold, passed around a table — a beer that treats drinking as a team sport.
