Hanoi Beer

Bia Hà Nội is the beer of Vietnam's north — a gentle pale lager from HABECO that fills bottle shops, restaurant tables, and celebration crates from Hanoi's Old Quarter to the Chinese border. The south drinks Saigon's brands; the north drinks this, and has for generations.

The lineage starts in 1890, when Alfred Hommel opened his brewery in colonial-era Hanoi to keep French troops supplied; the plant outlived the empire, becoming the state brewery that grew into today's HABECO, still headquartered in Hanoi. Few beers anywhere in Southeast Asia can trace an unbroken line that long.

The same company feeds one of the world's great drinking rituals: bia hơi, fresh unpasteurized draft brewed to be drunk within days, poured for pocket change at plastic-stool corners all over Hanoi — many glasses are drunk the same day they were brewed. Bottled Bia Hà Nội is the take-home version of that culture — light, easygoing, and everywhere in the north.

Pale gold and light-bodied, with soft steamed-grain malt, a mild sweetness, and a short clean finish carrying just a pinch of hops. Nothing about it shouts; it's a session companion for grilled meats and long, loud dinners — best drunk fast, cold, and in rounds.
