The story
Updated
The maple leaf on the can is not decoration: Molson Canadian is Canada's flag-carrier lager, made by a company that has been brewing in Montreal since 1786. The odd part is the brand itself — younger than rock and roll, launched only in 1959.
That gap is the story. The Molson family had been brewing on the St. Lawrence for 173 years — one of the oldest continuous businesses on the continent — before finally putting the country's own name on a label. The brand's defining moment came in 2000, when a television ad known simply as "The Rant" had an ordinary Joe deliver an escalating monologue on what being Canadian actually means; a beer commercial briefly became a national event.
Since 2005 the brand has lived inside Molson Coors, the transatlantic company formed when Canada's Molson merged with Colorado's Coors — a giant with headquarters split between Chicago and Montreal and 74.55 million hectoliters brewed in 2025. The maple leaf, at least, stayed put.
What it tastes like
Pale gold and brilliantly clear, with a light sweet-grain nose and a smooth, fizzy body that finishes fast and clean. A faint hop dryness closes each sip, but nothing slows you down. It is built for the cooler, the cottage dock, and the third period.
