For two decades and change, "gimme a beer" in America meant Bud Light more often than anything else — the light lager of stadium cups, backyard coolers, and roughly every Super Bowl commercial break since the 1980s.

Anheuser-Busch launched it in 1982, seven years behind Miller Lite, and closed the gap the St. Louis way: overwhelming advertising, with Super Bowl airtime bought by the yard. Spuds MacKenzie the party dog, the "Real Men of Genius" radio spots, "Dilly Dilly" — a decades-long run of ad-war wins that carried Bud Light past Budweiser itself to become the best-selling beer in the United States by 2001.

The crown passed to Modelo Especial in 2023, after a turbulent stretch for the brand. The scale remains enormous — Brand Finance still ranks it the world's No. 5 beer brand at $5.8 billion — and it is still the benchmark every American light lager gets measured against.
