Jupiler

Belgium is the land of Trappist ales, lambic blenders, and bottles with corks — and the beer Belgians actually drink most is Jupiler, a plain, cold pale lager with a bull on the label. It is the country's best-selling beer, on tap in cafés from the coast to the Ardennes.

It launched in 1966, named for Jupille-sur-Meuse near Liège, which makes it startlingly young by Belgian standards — younger than many of the enamel café signs that advertise it. In a country where brewing lineages run back centuries, the national favorite is barely older than color television, and nobody seems bothered.

Today Jupiler belongs to AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, headquartered up the road in Leuven with 484 million hectoliters brewed across its brands in 2025. The clearest measure of how national this lager is: Belgium's top football division has carried the name Jupiler Pro League. Order it as a small, foam-collared glass and argue about the match like a local.

Pale gold under soft white foam, and deliberately mild: light grain sweetness, a trace of hop spice, high fizz, and a short clean finish. Nothing about it is loud — that is the design. Served properly in Belgium it arrives small, cold, and with a neat collar of foam every single time.
