Tuborg

Tuborg is Copenhagen's other great lager name — founded on the harbour at Hellerup, north of the city, in 1873, and since 1970 a core brand of the Carlsberg Group. Its green-labelled pilsner, Tuborg Grøn, is a fixture of Danish life, and the brand travels widely across Europe and Asia, often outselling its parent in some export markets.

The company began as a harbourside industrial venture, but its defining moment came in 1880 with the launch of Grøn Tuborg, the pilsner that introduced the style to Denmark and remains the brand's flagship. The rivalry with Carlsberg was less fierce than it looked: the two Copenhagen brewers signed a profit-sharing agreement in 1903, decades before their formal merger in 1970.

Under Carlsberg, Tuborg has been positioned as the younger, more festival-oriented sibling — it sponsors music events across Europe — while Grøn keeps its place among Denmark's most popular beers. For beer travelers in Copenhagen, the Tuborg name survives in Hellerup place-names and in the green bottle on every supermarket shelf.
