The story
Updated
Nigeria brewed its first beer in June 1949, in Lagos, and it was Star — a pale, easy lager that has soundtracked Nigerian life ever since, from Lagos highlife clubs to Sunday family gatherings.
Nigerian Breweries built its first plant in Lagos to make it, betting that a young, fast-growing country would rather drink its own beer than imports — a bet that paid off spectacularly. The green bottle became shorthand for celebration across the country, and the brand picked up a nickname with proper swagger: 'Shine Shine Bobo' — the man with the shine, the guy with effortless cool.
Heineken has been in Nigerian Breweries' corner since the company's early days, and today Star is part of the Heineken family outright — a global group that brewed 235.65 million hectoliters in 2025, standing behind a proudly Nigerian green bottle. One note for atlas readers: Africa has several unrelated beers called Star; this is the Lagos original.
What it tastes like
Pale gold in its green bottle, light-bodied and gently sweet, with soft grain flavors, a mild fruitiness, and only a brush of bitterness. It's built for climate, not contemplation: drunk very cold against Lagos humidity, alongside pepper soup or suya, where that lightness is exactly the point.
