Carling

Britain's default pint is Canadian, and older than Canada itself. Carling — the mainstream lager pulled in thousands of pubs and stitched into decades of football sponsorship — started life in 1840 in London, Ontario, twenty-seven years before Canadian confederation.

Thomas Carling, a Yorkshire farmer who had emigrated to Ontario, brewed his first commercial beer there in 1840. The brand crossed back over the Atlantic in the twentieth century as Carling Black Label and dug in so deep that "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label" became a British advertising catchphrase — a Canadian beer winning Britain by out-Britishing everyone.

Today the brand belongs to Molson Coors — fittingly, an American-Canadian giant and the world's fifth-largest brewer at 74.55 million hectolitres in 2025 — and Brand Finance still counts Carling among the fifty most valuable beer brands on earth, at number 49. In Canada it is now a supporting act; in Britain it never left the main stage.

Straw-gold and lightly sweet, with a flavour closer to cereal and biscuit than anything hoppy — a gentle, unchallenging pint built for long sessions and louder conversation. Carbonation is brisk, bitterness is minimal, and the finish disappears fast. Best from a cold, well-kept tap in a busy pub with a match on the screen.
