The story
Updated
Depending on which capital you're standing in, Castel Beer may simply be 'the beer': a pale, easygoing lager that serves as the house pour across much of Central, West, and Southern Africa, run from Paris by Groupe Castel.
The group behind it started as a Bordeaux wine family business and became, improbably, one of the world's beer giants by buying into African brewing — including BGI, a brewing company whose initials date back to French colonial Indochina. Ask when Castel Beer itself was born and the answer shifts by country: it spread through a patchwork of local breweries from the 1950s onward, so even the label's history genuinely varies by market.
Today Groupe Castel is the ninth-biggest brewer on earth, with 44.5 million hectoliters in 2025 — a scale most drinkers outside Africa have never registered, because almost none of it is exported to them. One of the world's great beer empires, hiding in plain sight on café tables from Dakar to Douala.
What it tastes like
Pale gold, soft, and unchallenging in the best sense: light grain sweetness, a faint floral hop note, moderate fizz, and a clean, dry ending. It's made for hot afternoons and long conversations — the kind of lager that empties from the glass before you've thought to describe it.
