Bitburger

"Bitte ein Bit" — "a Bit, please" — is one of the shortest, most durable slogans in German advertising, and it tells you how Bitburger wants to be ordered: at the bar, on draft, without a second thought. This is a premium pils from Bitburg, a small town in the Eifel hills near the Luxembourg border.

The brewery has been at work since 1817 and turned its town's name into shorthand for German pils at its driest and most precise. It grew as a family company into today's Bitburger Braugruppe, anchored by the flagship Premium Pils, and made the draft tap its home turf — the slogan assumes you are already standing at one.

Bitburger brewed 5.2 million hectoliters in 2025, enough for the world's top-forty brewer table, and it travels well: across Europe and into the United States, it is one of the German pils names you are most likely to meet on a tap, poured slowly under a stiff head of foam.

Straw-pale and brilliantly clear under a firm white head. The sip is lean: cracker malt, then a decisive herbal-bitter snap — this is a drier, more bitter pils than most of its rivals — finishing crisp and stony. Its whole personality is that clean edge, which is what makes the second glass automatic.
