Bia Saigon

On a plastic stool on a Ho Chi Minh City sidewalk, Bia Saigon arrives with a glass full of ice — and that is the correct order of operations. This is Vietnam's flagship lager, brewed by SABECO, and across the country's south it is simply what beer means.

The lineage starts in 1875 with a small brewery founded in colonial Saigon by a Frenchman, Victor Larue. It survived empire, war, and nationalization, re-emerging as state-owned SABECO — and when the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1976, the beer quietly kept the old name. Every bottle is a small act of nostalgia the label never mentions.

Thailand's ThaiBev took control of SABECO in one of Southeast Asia's biggest beverage deals, and Bia Saigon now ships about 13 million hectoliters a year, ranking among Brand Finance's fifty most valuable beer brands. The ice, by the way, is practical rather than heresy: in tropical heat, cold beats dilution every single time.

Pale straw and feather-light: soft rice-sweet grain, a lemongrass hint of freshness, minimal bitterness, and a fast, clean finish tuned for 35-degree evenings. Poured over ice it thins out — by design. This is a beer for long, loud sidewalk dinners of grilled squid and shared plates, not slow contemplation.
