San Miguel Pale Pilsen

The Philippines' national beer is older than the republic itself: San Miguel Pale Pilsen has been brewed in Manila since 1890, present at every fiesta, beach table, and karaoke night since — less a market leader than a national fact.

The brewery behind it was Southeast Asia's first, founded while Manila was still under Spanish rule. And the famous confusion runs backward from what most travelers assume: the San Miguel poured in Spain belongs to a separate company that traces its origins to a mid-century partnership with the Manila original. The Philippine beer is the elder.

The parent company tells its own story. San Miguel Corporation, today one of the Philippines' largest conglomerates, grew out of this brewery rather than the other way around; San Miguel Brewery still anchors the group at home while Pale Pilsen follows the Filipino diaspora to Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Brand Finance ranks it No. 20 among the world's beer brands.

Deep gold in its stubby amber bottle, with a firmer malt presence than most Southeast Asian lagers: bread and light honey sweetness, a solid bitter backbone, and a dry finish that stands up to salty, vinegary Filipino food. Poured over ice — a common and entirely respectable Philippine serving style — it loosens into an easy all-night session beer.
