Sagres

Order "uma imperial" — a small draught — in a Lisbon tasca and the glass that arrives is, more often than not, Sagres: one of Portugal's two national lagers, and the capital's side of a long north–south rivalry with Porto-leaning Super Bock.

The brand appeared in 1940 from Sociedade Central de Cervejas, and the name was a statement of intent: Sagres is the wind-blasted cape at Portugal's south-western tip where Henry the Navigator's sailors supposedly studied before sailing off the edge of the map. A lager named for the launchpad of the Age of Discovery was never meant to stay a local beer.

It didn't. Now brewed at Vialonga just outside Lisbon under Heineken, which owns Central de Cervejas, Sagres follows the Portuguese diaspora around the world and still cracks Brand Finance's global top 50 — number 46 in 2025. The rivalry with Super Bock stays genuinely regional, though: ask for the wrong one in the wrong city and you'll get a look.

Pale gold with a thin white head and busy carbonation. Light cereal sweetness up front — white bread, a touch of honey — then a quick grassy hop bite and a dry, clean exit. It is served near-freezing in small glasses so it never has time to warm up, and it tastes best exactly where it lives: next to grilled sardines and salt air.
