Augustiner

Augustiner is Munich’s oldest brewery — founded in 1328 inside an Augustinian monastery — and, to many locals, its most beloved. It survived secularization, two wars, and the consolidation that swallowed most of Bavaria’s breweries, and it did so without ever feeling like a corporation: no television advertising, beer still poured from wooden barrels at its flagship halls.

That restraint is the brand. While its five historic rivals globalized, Augustiner stayed stubbornly Municher — the beer garden default, the local’s order, the mug that signals you know the city. Its Lagerbier Hell is widely treated as the benchmark helles against which all others are measured.

Soft, bready malt with a faint grassy hop lift and a notably gentle carbonation — Augustiner’s helles drinks rounder and quieter than its rivals, built for the second litre rather than the first sip.
