Zhujiang / Pearl River

The name just means Pearl River: Zhujiang is Guangzhou's hometown lager, named for the river the city sits on, whose delta went from farmland to the workshop of the world inside a generation. Across South China's Cantonese heartland, this is the pale lager on the table.

The brewery is young by big-beer standards — founded in 1985, just as Guangzhou's boom years opened — and it grew at the same speed as the city around it. Guangzhou Zhujiang Brewery turned out 14.62 million hectolitres in 2025, twentieth among the world's brewers, and Brand Finance rates the brand the 47th most valuable in beer — all from a company that mostly sells in South China and its export channels.

Its real qualification is the table. Cantonese eating runs long — dim sum mornings, late-night claypot stalls — and a cold, light Zhujiang is the standing accompaniment, doing quietly at home what Tsingtao does loudly abroad.

Very pale straw, almost white-gold, with a loose fizzy head. The flavour is delicate: soft rice-and-grain sweetness, faint fresh-cut-grass hops, and a light body that slides past chili and garlic without arguing. The finish is short, clean and slightly sweet — a beer engineered for humid subtropical evenings and long tables of shared food.
