Tusker

Kenya's national beer is named for the animal that killed one of the brewery's founders — and Kenyans wouldn't have it any other way. Tusker is the pale golden lager that has fronted Nairobi bars, safari camps, and family celebrations since 1922.

The founding was a family affair: two brothers started the brewery in Nairobi in 1922, and when one died in an elephant hunting accident soon after, the survivor named the new lager Tusker in his memory. A century on, the elephant on the label reads as pure national pride — 'Bia yangu, Nchi yangu,' as the famous slogan put it: my beer, my country.

The ownership picture is mid-plot-twist: East African Breweries has long had Diageo as controlling shareholder, but Diageo has agreed to sell its stake to Japan's Asahi, with the deal expected to close in the second half of 2026. Whoever holds the shares, Tusker's place in Kenyan life isn't going anywhere.

Bright gold, light and dry, with a honeyed grain note from locally grown barley, low bitterness, and a clean, thirst-cutting finish made for equatorial heat. Its natural habitat is a table of nyama choma — Kenyan grilled meat — where a very cold Tusker is less a pairing than a requirement.
