Red Horse

Red Horse is proof that a strong lager can be a mass-market beer. San Miguel's extra-strength brand ranks No. 17 on Brand Finance's list of the world's most valuable beer brands — three places ahead of its own famous stablemate, San Miguel Pale Pilsen.

San Miguel launched it in Manila in 1982 as the potent counterpart to its flagship, and Filipino drinkers built a culture around it: the beer of rock gigs, long videoke nights, and the one-liter "litro" bottle passed around a shared table. The horse-head label is understood nationwide as a warning and a promise at once — this is the strong one.

It remains a San Miguel Brewery product under San Miguel Corporation, dominant at home and traveling with the Filipino diaspora abroad. Very few high-ABV lagers anywhere have reached this commercial scale, which makes Red Horse less a niche product than a second national beer — with a louder soundtrack.

Darker gold than its stablemates and noticeably weightier in the glass. The extra strength shows as sweetness first — dense malt with a caramel edge — then a warm alcohol push on the swallow that ordinary lagers don't have. Bitterness stays low, so it drinks dangerously easily; the slow creep is the beer's whole reputation, and the litro bottle doesn't help.
