The story
Updated
San Miguel, the pale gold lager stocked in seemingly every Spanish beach bar and a remarkable number of British pubs, has a Filipino birth certificate. The Spanish version began brewing in Lleida in 1957 — under license from San Miguel of Manila, a brewery founded while the Philippines was still under Spanish rule.
That makes this one of history's rare reverse exports: a colonial-era brand that came home and conquered the mother country. The Spanish operation grew independent, rode decades of beach tourism — holidaymakers met it on the Costas and kept ordering it back home — and eventually joined forces with Madrid's Mahou to form Mahou San Miguel, Spain's biggest brewer.
The combined group brews about 15 million hectoliters a year, with San Miguel among Brand Finance's forty most valuable beer brands and the UK as its great second home. The Philippine San Miguel still thrives, entirely separately — two beers, one saint, and an origin story neither side puts on the label.
What it tastes like
Clear gold with a modest white head, a touch fuller and sweeter than the average holiday lager: white-bread malt, a faint apple note, gentle bitterness, and a clean, dry finish. It is calibrated for hot afternoons and salty snacks — with a plate of boquerones or plain crisps, it does precisely what it promises.
