Itaipava
Grupo Petrópolis — Launched 1994

The story
Updated
Brazil's beer war has three great armies, and the youngest marches behind Itaipava: a pale lager launched in 1994 that became the flagship of Grupo Petrópolis, the biggest brewer still in wholly Brazilian hands. In a market ruled by century-old giants, it is the arriviste that stuck.
The name is a home address. Itaipava is a district of Petrópolis, the mountain town above Rio de Janeiro where Brazil's emperor once escaped the summer heat — cooler air, good water, and now one very large brewery. The advertising, though, ignores the mountains completely: Itaipava's imagination lives at sea level, on the beach, in exactly the sun its hometown was built to avoid.
That beach-first push made Grupo Petrópolis a genuine third force against Ambev and Heineken in Brazilian beer — 17.8 million hectoliters brewed in 2025, placing it among the world's top twenty brewers, all of it riding on a beer younger than many of the people drinking it.
What it tastes like
Pale gold, lively bubbles, a quick collar of white foam. Featherweight and sweet-leaning: soft cereal, a hint of corn, the gentlest bitterness on the way out. It's made to be served estupidamente gelada — stupidly cold, as Brazilians say — in small glasses refilled fast, before the heat can get to the bottle.
