Every Indian restaurant abroad seems to arrive at the same conclusion: pour Kingfisher. India's dominant beer — a smooth pale lager from United Breweries in Bengaluru — has followed the diaspora into curry houses on every continent, making it many drinkers' first and only Indian beer.

United Breweries' roots reach back much further, but Kingfisher launched as a consumer brand in 1978, wearing the bright-plumed bird that makes its bottle findable in any crowded fridge. It rose with India's growing cities — in a country where beer still runs a distant second to whisky — and beat every rival abroad: the UK and the Gulf pour striking amounts of it.

Heineken now holds control of United Breweries, which places India's national beer inside the world's second-largest brewing group. Brand Finance keeps Kingfisher among the fifty most valuable beer brands anywhere — not bad for a bird that only properly took flight in the late seventies.

Pale gold with a thin white head and an easygoing sweetness: soft cereal malt, a whisper of grassy hops, and a clean, dry-enough finish. It is engineered to cool heat — which is exactly why it works beside a vindaloo. Not complicated, just reliably cold, light, and unbothered.
