Carlsberg

Carlsberg is the Danish lager that put science into brewing. Founded in Copenhagen in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen — who named it for his son Carl and the hill ("bjerg") the brewery stood on — it became famous less for any single beer than for its laboratory, whose discoveries quietly improved almost every lager brewed since. The pale pilsner that carries the name is now sold in well over a hundred markets.

Jacobsen founded the Carlsberg Laboratory in 1875 to attack brewing's scientific problems, and in 1883 its scientist Emil Christian Hansen isolated the first pure lager yeast culture, named Saccharomyces carlsbergensis. Instead of guarding the breakthrough, Carlsberg shared it freely with brewers everywhere — ending the era of infected, unpredictable fermentations and arguably doing more for beer quality than any other single act.

Jacobsen also created the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876, run by trustees from the Royal Danish Academy, and the Foundation remains the controlling shareholder of Carlsberg Group today — meaning a slice of every Carlsberg sold still funds scientific research. The group has grown by acquisition into one of the world's largest brewers, with Copenhagen still its home.
